Miami Media and Entertainment - What's The 411? |

May 18, 2008 : Sunday Lazy SundaySo I'm sitting around today, watching the NBA Finals game between the Celtics and the Cavaliers. A battle of LeBron vs. the Celtics, This weekend was like many others. Dinner with friends at OLA on James Avenue, Miami Beach, then off to somewhere on Washington Avenue for more drinks. We had guests in this weekend from out of town, and we headed out to dinner last night with them, and now there's a new perspective on ...perspective. The place is set, we landed at Ola Miami, party of four, we walked out from a great dinner with drinks and desserts, for a total near $250. Split amongst us was $62 and some change. Thats cool with me, almost sounds like a bargain to anyone who goes out locally. It was a sticker shock for those at the table who aren't from around here, and who values a good night as one that includes dinner and a beer at Chili's. Now, no diss to Chili's (we go there too), but that's not the point. If we were planing to hit Chili's for some grub, thats fine. But if you go out on the town and when the check comes, you make your comparison to that decent grub,... Now you understand why all eyes at the table circled in the air for a moment or two. When you step out on the beach with your peoples, there's an expectation that everyone who says "they're down with whatever... can handle what they're getting into. Not so, if you get what's going down at this table. So What's happening here? You're at dinner with 3 other people and you're in an upscale south beach restaurant & lounge. We love OLA, Great Good, Great Service, did I mention how good the food is? Ok, saying nuevo latino cuisine is another way of saying, "Wow, That's Really Good!" So, we're here at OLA, Fantastic. Eating, Drinking. Talking. You know the drill here, I'm going into a rant about my sirius satellite radio, and the recent press on the merger with XM, and the FCC ...you know, a good dinner banter. Just imagine your conversation flow here. You eat and drink well, you have a great time. Now, fast forward to the end of the dinner and the check comes. Great, you and your cool friend are like, wow $250 for all of us, ...and we drank?! Thats great, I think I saved money tonight! But... Here's where it gets interesting, I did mention this was all about perspective, right? So, walking upto where this moment begins. The two "other people" aren't from around here, they're in from the west coast, or wherever. As the initial shock from the check wears off (we are thinking that for South Beach, we just got what we think was a deal), she starts to say something about "how I only had the salad and some drinks, and...blah blah blah." Next, she goes into how "her man treats her right, that they go to Chili's (real nice and all), a couple times a month..." Oh Forreal?!
